Great things come in small packages!

Interview with Sheri Fink

Sheri Fink is a #1 international best-selling, award-winning children’s author, the creator of “The Whimsical World of Sheri Fink” children’s brand, and an international speaker. She writes books that inspire and delight children while planting the seeds of self-esteem that can have lifelong benefit.

Describe your current release in two sentences?

The Little Firefly is a heartwarming story about a late-blooming firefly who wants to be all grown up. When she’s the last firefly to glow, she learns an important lesson about unconditional love, friendship, and acceptance.

What was your childhood ambition?

As a young kid I wanted to be a writer, an artist, a teacher, a business owner, a mother, a princess, and a mermaid. I was very ambitious, even at an early age!

Please describe your writing environment.

My writing environment consists of my home office/studio and my backyard patio. When I’m writing, I like to have a special drink (lemonade or Coca-Cola), listen to brainwave music (supposed to stimulate creativity), and my trust notebook and pen. In my office, I have a few pieces of Fan mail and inspirational art around my desk. It inspires me to know that I’m making a difference in the world.

What career fields have you worked in?

Before focusing on my writing career, I was in online marketing for over 12 years. I worked in a variety of fields including technology, sports, entertainment, financial services, real estate, and retail. Having a diversity of experiences in a variety of fields helped me think more creatively and strategically.

How do you mesh your personal and professional life?

My personal and professional lives are nicely blended. I’m fortunate to work from home. Many of my friends are also writers. It works well for me because it feels like many of the things I do for “work” are actually fun for me. I have nontraditional business hours where I might be writing late at night, speaking at events on the weekends or in the evenings, etc. It can sometimes be a challenge to schedule enough downtime for myself. I’m focused on taking extraordinary care of myself so I can do my best work and get maximum enjoyment from my life. It’s a good goal for me and helps keep me balanced.

If you had to choose one person to have dinner with, who would it be? And why?

I would love to have dinner with J.K. Rowling. I read her Harry Potter book series as an adult and it inspired me to start writing fiction again. I had written a lot as a kid, but lost touch with it through college. Rowling’s books have a special magnetic quality to them. Her writing really resonates with me and I would LOVE to discuss it with her.

What are you working on currently?

I’m currently writing my next book in The Little Series, The Little Seahorse. I’m excited to expand The Whimsical World of Sheri Fink into an underwater world. The book will debut on March 22, 2014.

I’m also creating an activity book, Fun All Year Long with the Little Gnome, for this Fall. The book will have fun activities for kids as well as a story that enables them to help the Little Gnome by solving the puzzles and completing the book.
