A facebook friend asked me to write a story about her and here is the result:
“Get off my
foot!”
Libby pushed the
newborn calf towards the wandering tongue of its mother. Strands of hay fell
like snow from her jeans as she stood to give her knees a break. It's the third
night in a row a cow decided to go into labor in the middle of the night.
Libby frowned and brushed the remaining hay to the ground.
The calf made a soft
snuffing noise in search of breakfast. Libby smiled in spite of the lost hours
of sleep. New life always made her smile,
she couldn't help it. Slowly, the stable filled with warm sunlight and dust
motes danced in the rays slipping through the cracks in the wall.
Libby reached
out to the calf and stroked the warm wetness.
“Welcome to the
world, little fella.”
