M.J. Rose |
What made you start out in the erotic suspense genre?
I didn’t
know that’s what I was doing.
Okay how would you describe your writing?
I just
started out telling a story, writing a book I wanted to read and that’s what
came out. There was no category at the time so it made things difficult for me.
Are the characters in your books based on
people in your life?
The characters
are no one I know and that’s what makes writing a challenge.
How do you create your characters?
I invent
characters, finding them among the words, bringing them to life.
I immerse
myself in books and the atmosphere of my book and I make a journal for the main
character filling it with things that matter to him or her.
How long does this process take?
It takes me
at least three months to get started.
Is there a favorite location for you to
write about?
I love to
write about Manhattan because it’s my hometown and Paris because it’s the city
of my heart.
What's your favorite part of being a
published author?
I have the privilege
to spend so much time writing books.
What's the worst part?
I don’t
think there’s anything bad about what I do – I feel extremely lucky.
How do you keep disciplined in your
writing?
I don’t, but
deadlines and contracts help. So does my own nervousness. If I don’t worry
about characters I worry about people I actually know and get too anxious. I
have to have a book going so I don’t have a nervous breakdown
If you could go back in time with your
present knowledge is there anything you would do differently with your writing?
Yes there
are a few contracts I wouldn’t have signed.
How would you encourage fledgling writers?
Write for
your love of writing. Success is not only fleeting but its ephemeral. But the
pleasure of telling stories – that’s real.

Hi MJ and Christine--what a great interview! MJ, I know the feeling about having to have a book in the works--that's the only thing that truly feels right to me, working on the book, getting the words down. I love the idea of the character journal--I'm stealing it! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove the book trailer! Thanks for pointing out why writers take up marketing--because we want someone to read the books that we write!
ReplyDeleteMJ, you're right about writing for writing, not success. If authors write for any other reason, they should get their heads examined!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
