Andrea Buginsky meets expectations!

Andrea Buginsky

Today author Andrea Buginsky is going to discuss suggestions to better meet reader’s expectations.

How does a writer identify their audience?
I think authors pick an audience based on what they like to read and who they like to write for.  Once you have that audience selected, you emerge yourself into their world and learn to speak their language.

Where can an author discover what their readers want?
From the readers themselves, for one. They can also research different websites, books and magazines that their target audience reads and see what they’re responding both positively and negatively too.

Can you give an example where you satisfied the expectations of your audience?
Several good reviews I’ve received included the different voices I’ve used for my characters. They each have their own unique voice that allow readers to find themselves in at least one. I think I also included enough action to keep readers going throughout the story.

Is it possible to satisfy more than one type of reader within one book?
I’m sure it is. There are several different children and YA books that adults love to read just as much. For my book, I think again it’s the mix of characters I have. I have some older ones and some younger ones, for the different age groups of children, from Middle Grade to Young Adult.

How does a writer find feedback to ensure they are satisfying the desired audience prior to publishing?  From reader comments and reviews. Also word of mouth. My aunt told me about a friend of hers who told her that her daughter had found and purchased a book online that she loved. She started to describe the book, and my aunt asked who the author was. It turned out it was my book!

Will you share what inspired you to become a writer?
I have enjoyed writing since I was a kid.  When I got to college, I decided to turn it into a career, and earned my BA in Journalism.  I have been freelance writing for several years now. I have always wanted to write a book, and decided I wanted to write for children.  I love fantasy movies like "The Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter," so I decided to try my hand at writing one of my own.  I am very excited to announce my first publication, "The Chosen," a young adult fantasy I worked on for about three years. I live in the Tampa Bay, FL area, where I grew up.  I am originally from NJ.

  2. I have to agree that reviews are a good source of reader feedback. It can be very hard for an author to judge what will work or not work, until the book is actually published. The good thing is that it is relatively easy to post a new edition of an ebook, if it's not meeting reader expectations!

  3. Enjoyed reading the interview. Word of mouth is very powerful in and of itself. Several copies of mine were sold due to that here in the mountains.

  7. Good interview. Hard to get word of mouth when you are new to the craft. Good insight though.
