“Therehe goes again.”

Idrop my book and run to the window nudging my sister over for a clearer view.

“Whydoes he keep doing that?”

Mysister shrugs chewing on a piece of her hair.

Watchingthe old man walk backwards in the park every afternoon is a welcome change fromthe view inside the apartment where I live.

“Brittany,where is my brush?”

Mysister cowers as my aunt stomps into the living room. Her makeup is smeared,and it makes my hands itch to fix it.

“Idon’t know, auntie.”

Ipush away from the window ledge.

“I’llhelp you find it, aunt.”

Myaunt ignores me as she yanks clothes off the couch and curses.

“BrittanyI want my brush in two seconds, or I'm going to give you something to cryabout.”

Mysister crouches beneath the window whimpering. I step in front of my aunt.

“Isaid I’ll help you find it.”

Theintensity of my aunt’s glare tells me to brace for impact. Her aim is off, butthere will be a bruise on my arm tomorrow.

“Don’tyou disrespect me, boy.”

Irub my arm hoping she will leave Brittany alone.

“Damnkids. Why did my whore sister die?”

Shewipes her eye with the inside of her forearm. My fingers wriggle at my sides asI draw straight lines of color on her face, in my mind.

Aknock at the door sends my aunt scrambling to her feet. She opens the door toher newest girlfriend, Talia, who strides into room surveying the terrain witha sneer.

“Whyaren’t you ready to go?”

Myaunt looks at Talia with awe. It’s hard not to, her hairdo nearly touches theceiling, and she glares at everything in her severe, gothic makeup. Her lipcurls with aversion when she looks at me.

“Whata waste of a body.”

Istep back and sit next to Brittany while my aunt buzzes around Talia like a flyaround manure.

“Justgive me a second to get ready, Talia.”

Myaunt rushes to the bathroom, and Talia sits on the couch with a heavy grunt.

Brittanyand I stare at the ground. I know if I make eye contact with Talia, she willrelease a torrent of hateful insults about how useless boys are.

Mercifully,my aunt exits the bathroom with her hair in a frizzy ponytail and makeupadjusted for a night of partying.

“Howdo I look, Talia?”

Myaunt sticks her hip out and puckers her lips. Talia stands and walks to theopen door.

“Itwill do.”

Myaunt laughs and then frowns in my direction.

“Idon’t want you to burn down the apartment, so make sandwiches.”

Brittanydrops her hair from her mouth.

“But,there’s no jelly.”

Myjaw clenches and I send Brittany a look that silences further protest. My auntthrows up her hands.

“Fine,starve.”

Sheslams the door, and I listen gratefully to sound of screeching tires leavingthe apartment complex.

“Dannyhe’s still doing it.”

Brittanychews her hair and points at the man walking backwards.

“Whydoes he do that?”

“Idon’t know Brit, maybe he has eyes in the back of his head.”

Ipress my nose against the glass, and my breath fogs my view. Turning away fromthe window I call over my shoulder.

“Comeon, let’s put on our face, so we can go ask him.”

Brittanyfollows me into the bathroom and watches as I put on one of my aunt’s wigs.Talia isn’t the only one who hates the fact that I’m a boy.

Thecounter feels cold and hard against my stomach as I lean close to the mirror. Iexpertly apply eye shadow, mascara and lipstick.

“Isit my turn, Danny?”

Ifluff the curls of the wig and check both sides of my face for any flaws.

“I’mnot Danny, I’m Dacia now.”

Thecolors are a stark against my skin tone, but I’m limited to my aunt’s supply.

“Comehere, Brittany and purse your lips.”

Brittanycloses her eyes as I darken her lips.

“There.”

Shelooks in the mirror and smiles at her reflection.

“Whycan’t I have eye makeup?”

Iwalk to the hall closet to get my sneakers.

“Becauseyou’re still too young.”

Brittanypouts as she puts on her shoes.

“Ready?”

Brittanynods, and I open the door. She grabs my hand as a neighbor offers candy. Therevulsion quickens our pace to the park.

“Therehe is.”

Brittanypoints to a white form flitting in and out of sight between the trees. I leadBrittany to a bench near the walking path, and we sit and wait for the man topass.

Thecrunch of gravel warns of his approach, and I scoot to the edge of the seat. Myheart beats a little faster, but Dacia isn’t afraid of anything.

“Heyyou!”

Theman keeps walking.

“Hey!”

Brittanyscrambles off the bench and waves at the old man. He stops, looks at her andthen at me.

Ihurry to Brittany’s side as she demands.

“Whydo you always walk backwards?”

Theman puts a finger next to his ear and shakes his head. Brittany yells louder.

“Whydo—“

Iput a hand on her shoulder.

“Hecan’t hear you, Brittany.”

Brittany drops to the ground and wipes awaythe gravel to reveal a patch of dirt. She grabs a twig and begins to write.

Theman and I watch her slow progress. When she finishes she looks up at the oldman and points at the dirt and then to her chest.

“Br-it-ta-ny.”

Hervoice sounds strange as she over annunciates each syllable.

Theold man crouches next to her and gently takes the twig from her hand. He writesand then points to his chest.

“Edgar.”

Brittanygiggles, snatching the twig back to resume scribbling.

“Whydo you walk backwards?”

Brittanytakes a few backward steps and points to Edgar.

Theman gets a misty look in his eyes. He shifts the dirt to freshen the writingsurface and accepts the twig from Brittany. I peek over his shoulder and readout loud.

“Iprefer the view.”

Brittanylaughs, mars his writing with her hand and writes in return.

“Why?”

Theold man shakes his head sadly and takes the twig after scuffing the dirt.

“Allmy loved ones are in the past so that’s where I look.”

Theold man stands and tries to wipe off the dirt clinging to his knees. He gives abrisk wave and begins walking away from us.

Brittanywaves in return and then looks at me.

“I’mhungry, let’s go home and eat.”

Itake her hand and think about the old man’s words.

“Doyou miss mom, Brittany?”

Shesqueezes my hand and wordlessly we walk home backwards.

I'm thirteen again!

Wyndano’s Cloak by A.R. Silverberry

Wow this was anexcellent and meaty book! I felt like I was thirteen years old again and havingall kinds of adventures with my storybook friends. This story focuses on twomain characters Jen and Bit. Jen is a trained warrior and uses her strength andwit to overcome the challenges she faces in the rescue of her mother. Bit, onthe other hand, uses her inner strength of character and purity to succeed inher adventure to rescue her beloved.

I loved theduality of the intermingled storylines. The scenes were painted beautifully andeach chapter compelled you to the next. It reminded me of a few young adult booksI love. Each character has their own voice and is easily distinguishable. A fewtimes within the story short back-stories were told. I felt they were adistraction for the real story which I was hungry for. The ending felt right,unrushed and genuinely lovely.

I would recommendthis book highly for any young adult. It’s sure to become a quick favorite.

This is the storyabout how Blair Nightingale found what she truly wanted. In the beginning, allBlair wants to do is escape her small town for the wonderful world ofopportunities outside it. Larry is just the handsome man to give her theopportunity she desires. Within a few months Blair is transplanted from herquiet Indiana home to the noise of California. Blair’s dreams seem to have cometrue until Larry dies of a heart attack, and Blair’s world is thrown intochaos.

I absolutely lovedthe interaction between Blair and her sister. I have four sisters of my own, andthey are my best friends. There were a few moments in this book that made mesmile. Everyone loved Nana’s three-layer chocolate cupcakes. (I may have to experiment with that!) Forgiveness isa part of any relationship. Do what makes you happy in life, and you’ll neverwork a day.

Fans of chocolate,drama, and romance will fall head over heels for this delightful tale.

The doctor’s words cut threw me like a butcherknife. “You will never be able to have children.”

After three hours of emergency surgery the resultswere final. No children, now or ever.

I tried to rest in the glaring light of therecovery room but all I could think about was the grim diagnosis. No children...

I loved children and had always wanted to be amom. I had even bought baby clothes while I was still in high school and Idreamed of one day being a mother and naming my children, being there for themand loving them.

I didn’t know why, but I only bought boy clothesand imagined having a son who would be my little man. I would dress him inLevis and lumberjack boots and he would be the epitome of what a little boyshould look like. I had such dreams for him.

After my surgery I went home to rest and rebuild.I was depressed and felt an emptiness inside of me but I had to focus my energyon getting well.

Imagine to my surprise, one month after surgery, Iwas pregnant with twins, twin boys! The boy clothes had not been purchased fornothing.

I carried them without incident until my fourthmonth. I began showing signs of distress and the doctor put me on total bedrest.

I was terrified for my babies and prayed every dayfor God to let them be okay. Please let me be the mother that I had alwaysdreamt of being.

The pain had been present all day, cramping, mindnumbing pain that showed no signs of stopping. I knew what was happening butcould not accept it. One of the babies was letting go and leaving room for hisbrother to survive.

One week later, he let go as well and decided tojoin his twin.
No words of comfort could console me. I had takenon the burden of blame and anyone else in my path was also at fault. I had toblame someone for I could not accept the real reason for my loss.

I had gotten pregnant too soon after delicatefemale surgery. The heaviness of a baby, doubled by twins, was too heavy toadhere to my body. I had lost them and in a flood of blood and pain, they weregone and no amount of trying to push them back into place was going to heal me.

I spent the next three months in a crying,miserable haze. The emptiness I had felt after surgery had returned, but thistime, it was stronger then before.

I had failed them. I had been able to create amiracle, two of them, and somehow I had not been strong enough physically tohelp them survive. I was lost.

My then husband could not comfort me, could notconsole me with his words of sympathy. They were his children too but I hadforgotten that somehow. He was grieving as well.

He made the decision to buy me a puppy. I laughedat this silly notion. I did not want or need a puppy. I wanted my children back.

This was an impossible task but a puppy was morewithin his reach.

His mother found an ad in the local paper forpurebred Rottweiler puppies. I certainly did not want a dog of this breed,having read horror stories about them but he reassured me, so reluctantly Imade the call.

It had been 10 weeks since they placed the ad andby chance had one puppy left, a male.

Ten weeks? I asked them when the dog had been bornand the breeder said, October 18, 1998...the night I lost my second son.

We made the trip to meet this little bear cub andas he was handed to me, I could feel a wetness on his bottom where he had justbeen bathed. He also had a mean case of the hiccups.

I took him home and as he whined all night, Ithought we had made a mistake. He was a dog and I had no idea what to do withhim.

So, as any mother would, I picked him up, held himand slept on the couch with him nestled safely in my arms. I was in “mommymode” and he needed me and I guess I needed him too.

The next morning, I was in love.

Kurgan has been with me since he was 10 weeks old;he just turned 13 last October. He was diagnosed with cancer over 17 months agoand at that time, only given 10 months to live.

He is in my heart, my blood and he is the air thatI breathe.

He is my son, my only child and he will always bea part of me.

Bring Miracle Back!

Evangeline’s Miracle by Lisa Buie-Collard

This story is a genealogicaland relationship journey for struggling writer, Evangeline Lacroix. The catalystto begin this adventure is through a piano concert where Evie meets the ghost ofher distant relative Miracle. They begin to communicate through dreams, andEvie helps change the course of history. Meanwhile, Evie’s husband leaves herbecause she refuses to bear his children. Evie continues to string together herpast in desperate hope to secure her place in the world and reconcile with herhusband.

I thought thisbook was okay. The climax happened way too early in the book, the climax that mattered,in my opinion. I wish Miracle’s ghost communicated throughout the entirety ofthe book. As soon as her voice was silenced the book lost its hold on me.

If you enjoy genealogy,history, drama and a touch of the paranormal, this is the book for you.

Mynumber one goal today is to find a story. Stories aren’t hard to find whenthere are groups of people milling around.

Icall my dad and finally accept his offer to attend the annual auto show. Heagrees to pick me up in a few minutes.

“Thanksfor driving, dad.”

“Noproblem, Abby. What made you change your mind about coming today?”

“Ithink my mental well of stories is running dry. I hope the auto show will havea few I can use.”

Dadhonks the horn as we park in front of my sister’s apartment complex, the finaladdition to our group. She scowls as she walks toward the pickup.

“Youcould have called instead of honking.”

Shewaves her cell phone in the air.

“Butthen I wouldn’t have pissed off your neighbors.”

Dadhonks the horn again for good measure. My sister ignores him popping a stick ofgum in her mouth as my dad, brother and I settle in for the short drive to theconvention center.

“Geez,nine dollars for parking?”

Ipunch my brother in the shoulder.

“Quitcomplaining it’s going to be worth it.”

Mybrother grimaces.

“GladI’m not paying.”

Obedientlywe follow the line of cars into the dark abyss of the parking garage. Dad bootsus out of the car so he can squeeze into “the perfect parking spot.”

Thelight above the elevator beckons. At first, we are the only passengers but theoperator keeps the doors open as person after person joins our group. I feel mystomach tighten.

“Ohdear, we're gonna die.”

That’sthe first time I see him. He glances at me after my outburst and looks awaysmiling. The doors open the crowd parts for me to be the first to exit. Isurvived! I almost skip to the ticketcounter.

“Twelvedollars, please.”

Ihand the clerk my credit card while my dad and siblings sort out who is payingfor whom. We go to the next line and wait for the show to open. I scan thecrowd and listen for interesting conversations. Elevator guy is to my lefttalking with his friend. I nudge my sister.

“Ohdear.”

“What?”

“Elevatorguy.”

“Sowhat?”

Ishould have known she wouldn’t acknowledge my fear of human interaction. I’m anobserver by trade and distrustful by nature. I’m here to find a story to write,that is all.

“Hemight be interested.”

“Perishthe thought!”

Mysister is always trying to set me up. I think she wishes I would return thefavor.

“Ticketsplease.”

Isurrender my ticket and pause for the stamp on my hand alerting all staff thatmy presence is allowed.

Thecrowd surges ahead to an exhibit marked TheTumbler Experience. Ooh’s and ah’s erupt from the audience as the vehiclespower through the course. I nudge my sister again.

“Thatlooks like fun.”

Shenods and helps me corral my dad and brother, and we sign up for a ride.

Theline stretches the length of seventeen Tumblers so I listen again for storyleads.

“Ohdear.”

“Whatnow?”

“Elevatorguy is in line too.”

Mysister rolls her eyes and snaps her gum.

“You’reprobably going to see him a lot since we’re in a building.”

Ipretend to watch the vehicles on the course. I’m irritated my sister isn’ttaking my situation more seriously.

“Sorrythere’s only room for three at a time.”

Theemployee smiles as they usher my family into the giant rig and wave me away.

“Okay.”

Istep back in line.

“Youcan ride with us.”

Iturn to see elevator guy behind me.

“Yeah,you can have the front seat.”

Elevatorguy’s friend added.

“Uh,okay.”

Thenext monster truck pulls up, and I climb in the front seat.

“Welcometo the Tumbler experience.”

Ismile politely at our driver/salesman and promptly ignore the rest of his pitchas we edge forward in the course.

“Ohdear.”

Thefirst station jostles me side to side. Elevator guy snickers.

“Ohdear!”

Thenext station leans the vehicle practically on its side. Elevator guy and hisfriend chuckle.

“Oh dear!”

Igrab the door handle as we drive up the steep incline. Elevator guy and hisfriend laugh freely.

Ipry my hand from the handle when we reach the ground again. The car stops andanother employee opens the door.

“Didyou enjoy your ride, miss?”

“Sure.”

Ijump to the ground and walk to the exit. My sister smiles as I approach.

“Holdmy purse? I need to go to the bathroom.”

“Okay.”

Itake the purse and lean against a display advertising free rock climbing. Ilook at my dad and brother.

“Heyguys, want to rock climb?”

Mybrother and dad give me identical looks of disdain.

“Watchmy stuff then.”

Isign another waiver and the climbing safety gear is snapped into place.

Elevatorguy taps me on the shoulder.

“Wannarace?”

Mystomach drops.

“Uh,sure.”

“Ready,go!”

Igrab the first hold and pull myself up. Milliseconds later elevator guy pushesthe button at the top of the wall. A siren announces his climbing prowess. Ifinish climbing and press my button and look down. My sister is beaming as shetakes a picture of me with her phone. Elevator guy gives me a thumbs up.

“Goodrace.”

Inod and rappel to the ground. I snatch my belongings from my brother, andcontinue my tour of the auto show.

Mydad and brother were captivated by the entrails of an electric car while mysister and I make a beeline a convertible Mercedes. I open the driver’s sidedoor.

“Wantto get in with me?”

“Don’tmind if I do.”

Wasthe answer from elevator guy.

“Let’sgo to the mountains or the beach.”

Ilook at the door panel. There is no sign of a door latch.

“Idon’t think this is a mountain-type car.”

Irun my hand along the door panel in vain for the handle to release me.

“Okay,the beach then. This is a great car, don’t you think?”

“Ifonly the door handles were visible.”

Ifinally find the latch and open the door hastily.

Mysister was nowhere to be seen. I fold my arms and stalk to another car display.Elevator guy's friend approaches and observes.

“Thisis the coolest car ever.”

“Really,that's nice.”

Mysister reappears as I walk away from the rotating display.

“Wheredid you go?”

“Youwere talking to that guy.”

“Notby choice. I was inviting you to sit in the car with me, not him.”

Mysister smiles and then blows a bubble.

Weexplore the final displays of luxury cars without story to be found among them.I give up and follow my family to the elevator.

I check the other passengers.Elevator guy isn’t here. The elevator doors close and open again after a shortascent. The parking garage welcomes us with exhaust fumes and echoing racket.The coast is still clear. My dad pushes his key remote to locate where weparked. He keeps pressing the button making the truck honk repeatedly. I hurryeager to safe from further chance encounters.

“Thatwas a great show, don’t you think?”

Elevatorguy stands next to his car and grins at me as I walk past.

“Yeah,sure.”

Somuch for safety.

“Areyou doing anything later today?”

Whereis this guy getting the impression, I want anything to do with him?

“SorryI’m busy.”

Hefollows me to my dad’s truck.

“Ithink we have a lot in common. Let’s find out.”

Myfamily watches as I squirm.

Isee my chance to escape and seize the business card from his outstretched hand.He smiles and walks away.

“Thatguy has cajones.”

“Whateverdad let’s go, please.”

Mydad looks at me, raises his eyebrows and laughs.

“What?”

“Ithink you have your story.”

Book excerpt from my friend Lori Moore.

SETTING THE SCENE:

My former husband died unexpectedly in 2008, just 3 days short of what should have been his 50^th birthday. In fact, we held his funeral on his birthday, 9/15/2008. After he died, a friend suggested that I journal as a way to deal with my grief. The journal turned into the book, MISSING ANDY. An excerpt follows.

Excerpt from MISSING ANDY

"We did everything we could. I’m sorry. "

With just those seven words, Andy was gone. Five minutes earlier, I had arrived at the intensive care unit waiting room, where Andy’s dad and two brothers were waiting. I should have known that things weren't going well when the chaplain came in to pray with us. When the doctor who had responded to the emergency code in ICU walked in, it was just like a movie. Everything in the background faded away. I was sitting next to Andy’s dad, Bob. When the doctor walked in, we all looked up as he walked straight over to Bob and said those seven words: We did everything we could. I’m sorry. Then everything was silent. He didn't have to say the D word––dead. He was talking in past tense. It was obvious that Andy had passed away. While the doctor was speaking, the rest of the room disappeared in a fog. Then Bob started to wail. It wasn’t until Bob started wailing that it sunk in with his other two sons just what had happened. They too cried out in pain and started to cry. I was numb. We weren’t expecting it. This wasn't supposed to happen. Andy was just forty-nine years old and was fine only an hour before he passed away. The chaplain and I embraced Bob. They say there’s nothing worse than a parent losing a child. It’s not supposed to happen that way; it’s supposed to be the other way around.

This is how chaos is created!

Shannon tells us about his writing process.

My current book is called Returns. It is a thriller set in the fictional town of Everett Valley, Georgia. The tale revolves around Samuel Carsten. He is a young part time journalist and professor. He is called to the reading of his estranged grandfather’s will to find things are not what they seem. Soon, he is burdened with the knowledge of the horrors of his family. Samuel can choose to bury the unspeakable acts and become extremely wealthy or have the secret exposed and destroy his life.

I have always been fascinated by people that create chaos in the world through their unspeakable acts. I think often times we tend to forget the impact killers have on their own families and the lasting legacy. I was watching a documentary about serial killers when the idea popped into my head. I ran from the room to jot down some notes and the book was born.

I try to develop stories where the reader feelsinvested in the lives of the characters. When you pick up my book I want thereto be expectations of my writing. I want people to know they will have tothink, but at the same time it will be a wild ride.

I used to start writing without notes or outlines because I knew where my story wasgoing, but the process seemed slow. Eventually, I started writing roughoutlines. The outlines generally do notinclude dialogue unless I have a line that works out during the process. I have found that the outline format I use ismuch faster and it keeps me focused with the direction of my works.

Iwant people to understand that writing should not be about the money. I knowmany aspiring authors read the great stories about people writing booksbecoming rich seemingly overnight, but for many of those writers it has beenhard work and multiple works that have pushed out which have created thesuccess. The easy way to explain what every writer should do is simple; work.Write a book you are proud of and want to share. Once the book is published,market and write then write and write some more.

Becoming a High SeasMystery Writer

When my daughter, Laura got tired of working as a purser on a cruise ship, she submitted proposals for a travel guide to publishers and got a contract. Since I love to write, Laura and I decided to work on the project together. The research trip would be a long vacation gathering information by day and sipping cocktails on the veranda each evening. Wrong! We spent three days each on eleven different islands running like crazy to see everything and fell into bed exhausted each night. Writing a factual guidebook was hard work!

Don’t get me wrong, I cherish memories of the islands. I enjoyed the scent of exotic flowers, thesounds of string bands playing Christmas carols, and the feel of gentle oceanbreezes on my sunburned skin (I am a redhead). I rode a community taxi across St. Martinand tried to decipher the patois spoken by locals. My daughter and I went diving together. We floated over coral reefs filled withvibrant tropical fish and felt the champagne bubbles from hot springs in the ocean. We tasted weird but wonderful cuisine. As travel guide authors we couldn’t make ourreaders imagine those experiences in a factual guide book.

Laura planned to write a mystery set in the Caribbean but decided that she hated writing fiction. She gave the book idea to me and I startedwriting a mystery. A mystery novel takesplanning, especially when the goal was to describe all the exotic islands wevisited in the Caribbean. I invented a cruise ship company and charteda complex ship schedule to investigate a murder while my heroine travelled fromport to port. Luckily I could use ourguidebook to remember real locations and recreate the ambience of the Caribbean. Theresult was Murder Caribbean-Style, the first novel in a High Seas Mysteryseries.

Friends tell me that it’s fun to read this mystery and Cruising the Eastern Caribbean together while visiting the islands. I plan to offer the book free for two days atthe end of February, so watch for the announcement on www.quicksilvernovels.com ,Twitter, and QuickSilver Novels Facebook page.

The Corridors of the Dead by Jonathan D. Allen

Matty and a few other colorful characters make up the cast of this story. It's the classic fight between good and evil only problem is good and evil aren't clearly defined. The author takes us through a few surreal experiences with Matty's teleporting powers. Our hero is crude and brassy with little else to recommend her as a hero other than her love for her girlfriend Kristy.

It felt like all the characters were speaking with the same caustic voice excepting Kristy on occasion. Granted it was an adventure, but I kept getting distracted by the author telling me how I should feel or what something looked like.

Excerpts:
"He gave this heavy sigh, the sigh of a thousand worlds, my mother used to call it."

"Her eyes were ready to hop out of her skull and jump down on the floor, doing a little dance for our entertainment, but she gave us one of those mean little old lady nods."

The blond guy gasped, his eyes going wide. He looked like a kid who discovered that hot water was, indeed, hot.

I could excuse a few of these to illustrate a point, but this book is full of unnecessary similes and metaphors that drag on too long. I have an imagination and feelings. Unless it's crucial that I feel a certain way or that something must look like something else to move the story along, please let me do it.

That said I truly think Mr. Allen has a promising career in comics. He has a gift for detail that would move the storyline of a comic book quite well. This is a potential good read for the Young Adult audience.

Growth Lessons by Naty Matos

This book is acollection of meditations the author has had with her higher power. I’m notreligious, but I am spiritual. I found that when I replaced “God” with “TheUniverse” or “my higher self” I could hear the message of each passage clearly.We can all benefit from pausing to question our daily motives andgiving/receiving thanks.

I really relatedto the personal examples of the struggles and lessons learned from the author.For me knowing that there’s always another level of perfection, peace, andknowledge to attain is very comforting.

I would recommendthis book for anyone who would like some common sense and light added to theirlife.

My niece's cat, Matilda

The kitten reached out and clawed at my shirtin what seemed a silent plea for attention. Her calico fur matted to her tinybody wafted an unpleasant odor to my nostrils, yet I couldn't tear my gaze fromthose golden eyes.

Matilda's first stop in her new home was thekitchen sink. She didn't struggle as soap and water were liberally applied.Anyone who has bathed a cat knows thisis very strange. After a few days of lethargy, we took her to the vet anddiscovered she was sick. After a round of antibiotics, Tilly was an activekitten again.

Matilda is the tamest wild cat, there is. Shenever likes to be held and runs all over the house growling at unseen opponents.On the rare occasion that she does want attention Tilly will leap on your lapand slide her fluffy tail right under your nose effectively leaving youbreathless and fighting off a sneeze. She goes by many names depending on hermood, Matilda, Tilly, Tilbert, Butter Fluff, but my favorite is mine.

This is Mozart my niece's cat

Three years ago tucked away in the corner of the animal shelter, Paws n' Claws, he sat. The tinkling of dad's keys made him tilt his head to the side curiously. Dad shook the keys and he playfully reached through the bars with eager kitten paws. It was love at first sight.

I bestowed the name Mozart, my favorite composer at the time, on the growing black-and-white fur ball. Unlike most cats, Mozart barks instead of meowing. He often tears through the house as if the hounds of Hades were nipping at his heals, and plays a mean game of floor pinball when a chunk of ice hits the floor. Just, the mention of string can send Mozart spinning in anticipation.

As with most pet's rules of the house are up for discussion or debatable through a technicality. Life with Mozart is no different. The rule is no cats on the counter. Mozart's solution was to find a piece of paper or plastic bag on the counter and sit or lay on that; therefore, he's not technically on the counter. His largest feature is his white paws. One of his nicknames is Jazzy, which is short for Jazz hands.

Despite the flaws in Mozart's character, his positive attributes far outweigh any negative ones I could dwell on, especially when he curls up beside me at night and falls asleep.

Nitpicking with Sevastian Winters: A“Sudden” Problem

The first time I read “Stein on Writing,” by Sol Stein, atthe advice of an agent who took enough pity on me, to tell me that my writing sucked,and that I should go and learn my craft, I came across a line I will neverforget: “Every word matters.”

At the time, I rolled my eyes. I seriously thought the manwas full of shit. As time has progressed, however, I've come not only to agree,but to chant his mantra to the point of infuriating writers who think I'm apretentious snob. (Incidentally, I might actually be a pretentious snob,but that doesn't negate that I might also be right! Ain't that a bitch?)

Anyhow, yesterday, I came across a Facebook post from anauthor I respect wherein she was asking whether it was more proper to say, “allof the sudden” or “all of a sudden." Several people suggested that sheshould just use “suddenly,” and be done with it. Indeed, that was my initialresponse. But then, it hit me:

NONE OF THE ABOVE!

Something we forget, as writers, is that for a reader,everything that happens in a story happens all of the sudden. Indeed, the term itself, no matter how you want torepresent it, smacks of narrative voice, as if the narrator is equallysurprised.

I'm botching the job explaining this, so perhaps I shouldjust demonstrate.

Consider the following:

“All of the sudden, a truck crashed through the wall.Shards of drywall, joined books and other debris, enveloping the room in dust.Tina's heart jumped in her chest. Shelifted her arms and legs, a vain attempt to shield herself from flying debris.Something slammed into her shoulder, shooting white-hot pain through her. Shescreamed. A cloud of drywall dustenveloped the room. She squeezed her eyes, shut and tried to take a breath, butit was no use. She choked. She pulledher blouse over her mouth to filter the air for another attempt to breathe. Itworked. She squinted her eyes open.“What the hell?”

That's how many authors would show their readers whathappened. Indeed, I've been guilty of it myself.

The problem with the scene, however, is two-fold:

Firstly, the sequenceof events is skewed. By identifying the truck as the first order of business,we take the reader out of the scene. They are hearing about it, but not experiencingit with the character. Think for a moment, of the sequence of an unexpectedtruck slamming into the wall beside you: What happens? First, the worldexploded around you. Then chunks of debris smack into you, and envelop you indust. Then you respond. And choke on the dust. All of that happened before youmake enough sense of the situation to identify the intruder as a truck.

Secondly: Again, to the reader, everything is sudden. Theydon't know what's coming next... even if they guess. The addition of “all ofthe sudden” or “suddenly” is unnecessary commentary that does nothing to addtension to the scene. Indeed, just the opposite, it relieves the tension, byexplaining what happens before showing the aftermath. The reader missesout on the experience of sitting in the room when the truck blows theirenvironment apart. Here's the same scene in proper sequence of events:

Boom!

The wall to Tina's right exploded, hurling books, andshards of drywall at her. Her heart jumped in her chest. She lifted her arms and legs, a vain attemptto shield herself from flying debris. Something slammed into her shoulder,shooting white-hot pain through her. She screamed. A cloud of drywall dust enveloped the room.She squeezed her eyes, shut and tried to take a breath, but it was no use. Shechoked. She pulled her blouse over hermouth to filter the air for another attempt to breathe. It worked. She wipedher eyes and tried to squint them open, just enough to see.

“What the hell?”

She waved dust away from in front of her face and triedto look again. She reached out to a massive shape beside her. Metal. Roundedglass. She peered again into the abyss. Anger slammed into her soul as she realized what it was. Bob'struck!

Do you see the difference? It's more words, and more descriptions,to be sure, but partly that's because we are in the scene now, sorting out,with the character, what the hell just happened? Not knowing what had invadedthe room adds to the tension, and improves the story. Moreover, it puts thereader in the scene. They have only what Tina does to work with. Perfect!

Now, before you start giving me exceptions to the rule I'mnow espousing, I will clarify this: I can see how a character in the storymight use the word “sudden,” but other than that, though I didn't know ityesterday, I know for sure today; it doesn'tbelong in your narrative.

Learning to becomed a very much gooder author is aprocess.... a journey—not a destination. To some reading this, my advice herelikely comes across as nitpicking, but I guess, for me, that's why I love whatI do so much. Tiger Woods won his first Masters Tournament and then went hometo pick apart his swing. That's what pros do... and what I've tried todemonstrate here. I hope you've found it helpful.

How I are becomed a Very Much Gooder Author by Sevastian Winters

Reading this book is the equivalent of walking in the rain with the man who just proposed after he gave you a puppy for Christmas, who’s crazy antics helped you find the lost treasure of the Incas just in time to pay for the cure for your future mother-in-law’s cancer. Okay, not really but through one of the exercises in this book that potential story can now exist.

In my opinion, it’s vital to continue to hone your craft if you want taken seriously as an author. "Gooder" is a great barometer to measure your book against. Of course with any book that advises how to improve anything you must take what works for you and discard what doesn’t. That sentiment is expressly made by the author as he adamantly explains he’s not the be all or end all, but has experience and can point out pitfalls and blind spots to which we as writers can succumb.

I highly suggest you buy a highlighter when you purchase this book. You will want to make note of the sound information given throughout often in an entertaining tongue-in-cheek quip.

TheEmperor’s Opal is equal parts Tomb Raider, The Mummy, Cheers, and Lord of the Rings. Preston Blacks’s life is theposter child for a quiet, dull and normal life of desperation. That is until hemeets Tammy McKinley at his favorite bar. You see; Tammy is a wizard, intraining at least. Step by step, Preston loosens his grip on his preconceivednotion of reality and becomes the sole proprietor of magic necessities to the otherworld creatures. A magic wholesaler if you will. The strangeness of his storydoesn’t end there because soon he contracts with a vampire to find a very raremagic commodity and becomes a treasure hunter of sorts. With Tammy as hiscompanion they scour ancient sites for clues to the whereabouts of the preciousgem, Orphanus. Tammy’s companionship becomes problematic as the lure of thestone skews her once pure motives.

As I was reading Ikept wanting to look beside me as if I were at a bar listening to a strangerbragging about some alcohol-induced adventure. Mythical beasts, creatures fromyour dreams and nightmares spill across the page as you and the adventurer's speedtoward their goal.

All in all, a niceadventure, but more of a patchwork quilt of classic and modern adventurestories already told. I would recommend this story as a good young-adult-typebook. It’s a respectable take on the adventure genre in general.

Love and Wrath II: Confessions by G.E. Johnson

Author G.E. Johnson has released her sequel to Love and Wrath: The Beginning! Love and Wrath II: Confessions is written in a style that I love. Every chapter is a revival of the original story from the viewpoint of each main character. This style gives you a deeper insight to what is motivating the character. I must admit that I was a bit disturbed by the actions taken by the trio at the end of Love and Wrath: The Beginning, but now I can see how past experiences shaped the outcome that took place.

As a bonus the author provides an audio download (link download provided in the eBook) that brings the characters to life. Crafted with the artistic reading is background music that gives an added dimension to each character. It's reminiscent of one of my favorite public radio shows This American Life. After reading Confessions, I listened to the audio version and was entertained by the improvisation and eerie life each voice gave to the characters. I certainly have a different mental image of the book cast now that there's a voice to go with a name.

I applaud her excellent collaboration of voice, music and unique writing style. I'm eager to see what G.E. comes up with next.

It’s almost as if you’re looking through the lens of Lily’s camerawith the vivid words of the author. I was so involved with reading that Iforgot about my lunch in the microwave. Easy Natural Facelift by Alison Heath

For many, the beginning of a new year means several things.Time to renew subscriptions, taxes, and for millions of people it means finallytaking a closer look at their health. I had the opportunity to read the finalinstallment in the Easy Natural Face lift series. This book takes the readerthrough a list of health promoting, cleansing rituals and recipes.

I have juiced, removed meat from my diet, replaced meals with "green drinks," and eaten raw(This means no cooked food or dehydrated food that has been exposed to heatover 120°) to improve my health. The information in ENF really jived with my view on the importanceof what we put in our bodies shows on our faces.

I enjoyed the recipes and the lovely, vibrant photos. It wasa reminder why I should carefully consider my food/vitamin choices. Thedecisions I make now will reflect on my enjoyment of life later. I only wishthe author would have included before and after pictures of herself or otherswho have changed their eating and vitamin habits.

Although this isn't new information to me I would highly recommend this book for those that want an easybeginning point to improve health and increase energy.

Trouble Down South and Other Stories by Katrina Parker Williams

The stories inthis book contain the time between the beginnings of the horror of slaves inAmerica to the present plight of black Americans in the southern US. Thestories are a stirring reminder of what has been and what continues to be. Thisbook also includes some stories that aren’t as heart-wrenching, but more heart-warminglike Grandpa’s Courtship, and Rock.

I can’t imaginewhat it’s like to be dismissed entirely based on my skin color. I haveexperienced instant dismissal as a woman, however. I know this dims incomparison to what I read, but it sent the message of the book more deeply intomy heart.

I loved that thestories ended with education. When we decide to make education, empathy andlove a priority in our lives, then we will be able to move forward united.

I would recommendthis book to anyone that wants to grow their compassion and education. If wedon’t learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.

Samantha Jensen isa successful college professor and a perfect housewife. She is also beautifuland author of a new book. The dark cloud that hangs over her life is the brutality herhusband Jim metes out on a constant basis. Warring within Samantha’s mind is avoice that is demanded to be heard and freed from the turmoil. The other voiceis a combination of the outside demands and values based on what she thinkseveryone expects her to be. After finally choosing to escape Samantha goes on aspiritual pilgrimage to recapture who it is she wants to be. As an addeddimension to the story unbeknownst to Samantha someone is plotting her demise.

I can relate toSamantha’s total reconditioning of her self-perception. The path to self-discoveryisn’t always pretty. However, in the end, you take ownership of your life, anda new sense of control is born.

This story wasokay. It was difficult to pay attention in a lot of places. There are also charactersthat are so similar that it was hard for me to remember who was who. The ending buildsto a good climax, if a bit sketchy and a happily ever after scene that almostmakes up for some of the plodding from the rest of the book.

This is a goodstory for those who are curious what it’s like to be in an abusive relationshipand what it can mean when you try to leave.

Sex, Lies and the Classroom by James Wilcox

This story is thecrossroad where violent indifference meets disillusion. O’Connell is a teacherin a high-school in the center of a poverty-stricken district. He has a twistedsense of superiority about his seven-year tenure and refusal to give in likehis fellow teachers who have left the school for “greener pastures.” His prideis wrapped up in the challenge to save the students by holding them to a highstandard. Tyreshia, one of the students O’Connell is trying to save, refuses tobe a part of his program and lashes back.

I honestlycouldn’t relate to any of the characters. O’Connell appeared arrogant as he sawthe school as a challenge to overcome by forcing students to conform to hisstandards. The students were to do things his way and brook no argument ordebate. I felt this was a sharp contrast to his home life where he allowed hisyoung children to walk all over him by interrupting his conversations with hiswife and each other. It was if the statement were being made that rules andexpectations are meant for the bad kids at school.

The studentsO’Connell taught who lived in abject poverty were even less relatable. I havenever lived feared for my life walking home from school. I was neverpropositioned with drugs or prostitution. Going home meant a safe place. I canonly imagine the horror of this reality. I could, however, feel the ring oftruth to this tale. When you have several generations caught in the loop ofignorance, poverty, and pain, blame seems a momentary relief. O’Connellpersonified the act of life holding them down. The choice to attack him was acry for some measure of control in the lives destined for failure.

I generally don’tread books of this kind because of the harshness about life it brings to light.That being said the story was compelling, original and gripping. I had toknow what decision Tyreshia was going to make when O’Connell’s fate rested inher hands.

This is a greatfor read for those that enjoy a story with one dramatic punch after the next.

Heartsat Risk by Gloria Antypowich

I always get aknot in my stomach when I read a story about a woman that is willing to takeabuse of any kind due to the desire to be in a relationship. Enter FrankieLamonte. We meet her as she's decided to have a carefree weekend with a friendat the rodeo. Mentally, and vocally, she keeps claiming she doesn't want to getserious with a man due to her recent breakup. Her actions belie her words. Shegets into a minor physical scuffle with Colt Thompson when he mistakes heroffering a sugar cube to his prize horse as poison. This begins a tangled backand forth poisonous relationship (in my opinion) when they meet again at theranch where Frankie discovers that Colt is the co-owner of the ranch.

At first, I reallyenjoyed Frankie's independence and fiery spirit. I eventually began to lose respectfor the character as one by one she let her values slip to satisfy the baserneeds of the moment. Each time she failed to listen to her conscience she wasrewarded by coldness and disdain from her supposed lover, Colt. I could findfew redeeming qualities in Colt. Granted he was attractive, but why does thatallow him to be absolved of his crimes of infidelity, abuse, and flagrantdistrust?

Thehappily-ever-after left a bad taste in my mouth. It didn't feel genuine. That'swhen I realized it's just a story, a fantasy, an escape from the doldrums ofthe day-to-day. Although I can't agree with the author's definition of love, Ican't deny that there are a host of readers who will enjoy Colt and his rough,cold manner and Frankie's fragile and overly forgiving nature. I would givethis book a 3.5 if I could. The writing is good and the story flows easily. Iwas just disappointed by the glorification of an obviously toxic relationship.

MyJourney To Ebooks

A number of years back I was atraditionally published author working with major publishers and enjoying somesuccess. My first book was the launchtitle for a new line at Signet. Thatfirst contract for three books was secured with a synopsis and three chaptersthat got cut from the final draft of the book. I went on to write ten novels before opting for an early retirement.

Twoyears ago I got a Kindle and started filling it with books. My son, fantasy author Dan McGirt, wasrevising his books for new print editions and discovered a growing number ofwriters were excited about producing ebooks . I had just retired for the second time from a job in education and wasplanning on a lot of puttering and play when he called one day and said, “Weought to release your backlist as ebooks.”

I was skeptical, but went on tosecure the rights reversions where possible. Currently, three of my books— Dark Splendor, Whispers At Midnight, and Delilah’sFlame—are available as ebooks.

One day I came across thoseoriginal three chapters that had secured my first contract.

“This is a great story in itself,”Dan said. “We could publish it as anovella.”

“I’m on it,” I told him. We released the three chapters as Dark Prelude at Amazon in November. Thenext day three of my books were on genre bestseller lists. Two have remained on the lists since. The three chapters that first launched mywriting career have had a magical effect on this new phase as an ebookauthor.

Overall, I’m finding e-publishingexhilarating. Not being constrained by the guidelines of a publishing house orline have spurred my work on new book projects. It is a liberating to have control of content and pricing, cover andpromotion. It is also the greatest responsibility to have control of thesethings, but I am loving the learning of these powerful tasks and skills.

Having my books available for newreaders and knowing I am limited only by my own choices is a true joy.

Iknew when I needed a snack that this was going to be a good book. There are fewthings more charming and fantasy worthy than the regency era in England. I’mfascinated by the strict rules that “good society” dictates. This is where poorEulogy Foster first finds herself, on the outside looking in. She arrives aninnocent bumpkin one night in the darkened streets of Grosvenor Squaredesperate to reconnect with her estranged brother. When she knocks on his door,the disarray of her person belies her words, and she’s unceremoniously left tofend for herself. This is where Jack Huntley enters the scene as her unwilling rescuer.Then the true adventure begins.

Theonly character I truly connected with was Mrs. Featherstone. Although sheplayed a considerably minor role, she felt the most human. Eulogy was thetypical perfect woman archetype. She is full of virtue and flawless beauty withenough modesty to be unaware of the fact. Mrs. Featherstone was more of the cronearchetype, wisdom, care and mothering.

Iliked the story, for the most part. I did begin to be weary of continued referencesto “liquefied insides” from steamy stares between the main characters. I alsothought the ending was rather anticlimactic, but I loved the subtle nuances ofEnglish speech and the Irish dialects in the dialogue. I also loved the vividdescriptions of Eulogy’s surroundings.

Iwould easily recommend this book to Regency-aholics like myself and anyone thatenjoys a well-written story. I’m delighted to know this isn’t the only book byGrace Elliot!

There is nothing superfluous inthis volume, including the money smart food recipes in the appendix. All theinformation is clear, concise and instantly usable. I know a few people thatcould really benefit from this work, including myself.

Moses Lake Hot Spot!

On the eve of my book signing I gathered with family and friends to enjoy pizza at Chico's. This was the place to go as a child and still is the place to go to get great pizza in my hometown Moses Lake!

The following morning my family and I visited the cemetery and placed poinsettias on the graves of grandparents and friends. The strange hat you see me sporting is the Christmas tree for my sister Margaret. She would have been in her twenties now and a huge goof ball if my other siblings are any indicator of what her personality would have been.

I set up shop in Fae's Books and Crafts. It was a quiet day in the shop until my extended family showed up to show their support. Yay home-town-team!

I set out a basket of candy to entice interest. I managed to get a few people to chat and enjoy some chocolate caramel nuget and chat about my books.

My uncle was very animated and so excited. He called me Jessica Fletcher over and over again. I appreciated the sentiment.

We ended the day by ice skating in the outdoor skating rink and downing some scalding hot chocolate. That's my "ouch-that-really-hurt-I-think-I-need-some-ice" smile.

I love havingbackground music when I read a book, and although we’re six days into the NewYear, I miss my Christmas music. Thankfully I could justify the Christmasstation on Pandora as I read this charming novelette. So a hearty thank you tothe author for that!

Wynn is the ownerof a bakery that is feeling the crunch of the holiday season. Her assistant andfriend Gemma is barely helpful, especially when it comes to the secret crushWynn has on her customer Zane.

I loved how easilyI could see each character distinctly and hear their individual voice withoutdifficulty. I hope the author will write a book about Gemma. She’s so spicy andfun!

The word that keptcircling in my mind as I read was yummy!Yummy descriptions of the food and the fellas.

What a Nice Guy by Phil Torcivia

I admit readingsome of the articles in this book were laughable and that all of them weremeant to be taken with a grain of salt. That being said I had a very hard timecompleting this book. It was like trying to watch Dane Cook perform. Yes, a fewlaughs at the beginning and then you become distracted by the bizarre prancing,and wild-eyed looks punctuated with angry hand-on-hip stances.

I understand thatthis brand of humor has its place in society, and I applaud the author for findinga way to vent his frustration legally. It’s strange to me that women areentertained by this material. I would have thought that men would have been thebigger audience.

I rated this work threestars because while the writing was crass, it was intelligible, well puttogether, and I managed to think of an audience who could benefit from readingit.

I would recommendthis book for those that are thoroughly disenchanted with dating and above acertain age. It would be a great addition to a divorce gift basket along withcrushed candy hearts, cut up pictures, and a note written in a drunken stupor.

After striking a bargain not to become eaglet foodNaa’ki discovers that his needs aren’t the only needs that are important.

I loved how the animalcharacters interacted with Naa’ki. They saw the big picture and were willing toteach him so the future generations of humans and animals could coexist. I wishthe story was a little longer and that the emotions of the author would havebeen put more strongly.

This is anexcellent book to introduce children to their responsibilities as stewards ofthe environment. It is also a soft reminder to adults to look beyond thepressing needs of their own family and remember the plight of others.

CDO-Chief Daddy Officer: The Business of Fatherhood by Christos Efessiou

What a remarkable book! The strategiesand barometers were right in line with my way of thinking. Christos takes us ona journey of his life as a single parent of his daughter, Persephone. There’s adistinct taste of “play the game with the end goal in mind.” This is not a foreignconcept in business, but it can be in the setting of a family.

I felt really connected to theauthor as he laid the groundwork for the success of his family not onlyfinancially but, emotionally. Repeatedly he chose to see how he could improveas a person and parent. He chose to have a very open relationship with hisdaughter and was richly rewarded for his effort, absolute trust.

I loved CDO and read it in onestretch. I know I will read it again when the time comes for me to pursue myown family. I wonder if the author would consider writing a relationship book next.

I would highly recommend thisbook to parents who are struggling with the direction of their family. Soon-to-be-parentswho want to prepare as best they can to have a close-knit and successful familywould benefit as well. Prepare instead of react is clearly the well saidmessage of this book.

This is a comingof age story based on Halli set in the land of Phantasma. Halli is aneighteen-year-old dwarf who gets swept into a group of combatants broughttogether to save the Kingdom. She faces many obstacles, including self-doubtand the doubt of others concerning her abilities.

I loved how theobstacles Halli faced were thinly veiled representations of trials that youngadults face growing up. The moral said to me, surround yourself in life withthose who will support you and even when others doubt to listen to yourself andtrust in your abilities.

I wish I couldhave jumped into the mind of the author to get a better picture of thecharacters. How they looked and where they came from. I wanted to know whattheir motivation was to belong to a group that faced such dangerouscircumstances. That being said each character was easily distinguishable, whichmade the read pleasant and fun.

I would gladlyrecommend this book for a young adult. The story is fun, fast paced, andfeatures a female lead character.

Fluffy? That's preposterous!

The floor was crunching beneath my sneakersas the sinking feeling assured me if I looked down, I would see the deaththroes of some unlucky insect. Breathing from my mouth seemed a good idea untilthe horrible thought crossed my mind that I just might inhale one of the fliesthat droned in lazy circles around my head.

“Jacob come here I found what Iwant.”

A brave fly landed on my arm, and Iinstantly wished I could shake my skin like a horse and instead settled forshaking my whole body as I made my way to Louan’s huddled figure. The dimlighting made it hard to see her face, but I could hear the smile in her voiceas she coaxed the creature in the cage forward, “Come here little fella. Iwon’t hurt you.”

I’ll never forget the sound thatanswered Louan’s plea. Strong, clear notes pierced the air and for a moment itfelt so happy, like I was at my favorite fishing pond, and then the pitchwavered and dropped almost dropping memy knees in grief as I remembered the day my grandma died. Louan stared up atme in the dismal light as I followed the track of a single tear passing down hersunburnt cheek. Urgently, she whispered, “We have to save him.”

“Louan we don’t even know what he is.” I said clutching her arm attemptingto draw her away from the cage and this awful pet shop.

“Jacob Mitchell you take your handsoff me, or I’ll scream!” Louan squirmed out of my grasp and pouted in my direction.

“Are you sure you turned twelvetoday?” I scoffed sticking out my chest a full two months older and wiser.

Louan clutched her stomach anddoubled over in fake laughter and then stopped abruptly glaring at me as shesaid, “I did turn twelve today, and you promised I could have any gift Iwanted.”

This statement wasn’t entirely true,but Louan had a way of getting what she wanted and convincing you that it wasyour idea all along. Not because she was pretty, she reminded me of my neighbor'shound dog, not because she was smart, she always has to copy my math homework,not because she’s nice, she often yells at me or whoever happens to be nearher, but for some mysterious reason Louan gets what Louan wants. As I stoodfacing her with my arms crossed I knew that I was going to lose this argumenttoo, but for the sake of my pride and good sense, I had to pretend I wouldn’tbudge. A trilling sound came from the cage interrupting our standoff and Louandropped to her knees cooing at the cage door, “Mommy didn’t forget about yourlittle friend.”

I took a step closer to get a betterlook at the creature that held Louan spellbound, and a wave of odor struck mynostrils. I pinched my nose wondering how Louan could possibly tolerate her closeproximity to the animal and walked to the front of the shop desperate forcleaner air. I noticed the shop ownerscowling as Louan noisily drug the metal cage to the sales counter. Louanlooked at me expectantly and said, “Pay the man Jacob.”

I reached into my pocket for the wadof bills moist with the sweat that had seeped through my pocket along with thefew coins that made up my life savings this summer.

“Twenty-five dollars kid, noreturns, no exchanges.”

I gulped. That would leave only twodollars and thirty-five cents left over. So much for the fishing pole I’d hadmy eye on since spring. Louan blasted me with a grin that could charm the barkoff a tree, and I felt my hand release the money onto the countertop. The shopowner’s frown deepened as he unraveled the wet bills and stashed them in theregister. I accepted the receipt and picked up the cage eager to leave thesmelly shop forever.

My feet made little puffs of dustas I hurried along the road.

“Wait for me, Jacob!”

I skidded to a stop and waited forLouan to catch up. Her dark curls bounced up and down as she held onto herpants with one hand keep them from sliding off her scrawny body. Panting alittle when she reached my side and giving her pants a final upwards tug she asked,“Why are you in such a hurry?

The cage was snatched from my grasp,and Louan plopped it on the ground before I could utter a word opened the doorand reached inside. A blur of color darted up Louan’s arm and circled her neckbefore finally settling on her shoulder trilling happily. The creature was nobigger than a bottle of Tabasco sauce with eyes that glowed with goldencuriosity. His long pink tongue flicked out as if tasting the air, and then heleapt of Louan’s shoulder in a twisted spiral and stretched out leathery wings.Louan waved her arm and laughed in delight while I felt sweat break out on my forehead.

“What did you do that for?” I askedtorn between running and staying to help my friend. Louan looked at me with asly smile and gave a shrill whistle. The creature hovered mid flight as if itunderstood then dove straight at Louan only to land at her feet. Along theridge of its back white tufts grew and while waiting for further instructionthe animal began grooming the fluff. Louan stooped to caress her new pet andsaid, “See no harm done.”

“Louan your mom is going to kill me!You know she said don’t bring back anything alive.” I said

Louan’s home was the local pettingzoo according to her mother, and she warned me pointedly to avoid the pet shopas we walked out the door amid the cats and dogs swirling around our feet tofind a birthday present.

“No she won’t because she’s notgoing to find out.” Louan declared.

Louan fiddled with a chain aroundthe creature’s neck smiling when the clasp came undone, and it fell into hercupped palm. “Look at this Jacob. It was around Fluffy’s neck.” She said.

“Who’s Fluffy? I asked as Louandropped the chain into my hand. Using my thumb to wipe away the grime encrustedon the crimson gem sent a tingling sensation through my hand, and I heard Louanscream as we both stared up at an enormous dragon.

“Thank you for finally releas-s-singme.”

Stepping in front of Louan, Idemanded, “What do you want?

Fluffy looked down at me and lashedhis tail clearing a wide swath of weeds from the side of the dirt road and letout a series of hissing breaths, and I realized he was laughing.

“I wanted to thank you littlehuman.”

Louan was standing at my side clutchingmy arm and asked, “Is that really you, Fluffy?”

Fluffy sat down and gave us what Ihoped was a grin, and he nodded.

“I was tr-r-rapped in that tinybody for s-s-so long. Now I can r-r-return home to my Kingdom." Fluffylowered his head to our level and asked, “Will you come with me?”

“Yes!” Louan answered for the bothof us dancing with excitement. Fluffy dipped a shoulder to the ground invitingus to climb aboard his back. Quickly, Louan scrambled up and said, “Come onJacob get up here.”

“Are you crazy, Louan?”

I was jerked off my feet anddeposited on Fluffy’s back with a careless flick of his tail and within moments,I lost my baseball cap as we soared through the air. Louan squealed withdelight as we twisted and turned. Each downward flap of Fluffy’s wings loosenedmy grip on the furry spines until with a final wrench I slipped off and felllike a stone. I closed my eyes knowing that this was going to be the end. Iheard Louan screaming my name and landed with a thud. Slowly, I opened my eyesand saw the curtains from my bedroom stirring in the breeze above me and feltthe floor cold and hard against my back. I heard Louan call outside my windowagain.

“Jacob, get up it’s my birthday!”

Where do you live? Southern United States / Georgia

Do you have a family member or close friend who has served in the military?

Yes, several. My grandfather and four of his siblings (boys and girls) served during WWII. Father-in-law served in the years following, and my brother-in-law served in Vietnam. Right now, several cousins and friends are serving in a variety of places.

What leads up to this excerpt from your book?

In this section, my main character has just realized that the chef she’d been dating could be the murderer.

She was such a fool. But now it all made sense. His knife with Camillia’s fingerprints, her shirt with the bloodstains, and then, cleverly disguising Dennis’s death as an accident. He even practically told her he’d been at the gazebo just before Chip found Dennis. How could I be so dense? Even the stainless steel pot was a giveaway – Dennis didn't own any nice cookware. I had dinner with a murderer. A double murderer. And had a good time. How could I?

Gretchen sobbed into the pillow. When she left Melvin’s campsite, she didn’t want anyone to find her, so she picked up Half-Pint and some clothes, then went to Peg’s and locked herself in for a good cry.

This next excerpt is a couple of hours later:

She woke up cold. Just as she reached for the throw across the top of the sofa, she heard the tinkle of breaking glass and instantly, she was wide-awake. The sound came from the direction of the utility room. Gretchen grabbed her cell phone off the coffee table and dialed the sheriff’s cell phone, which she’d programmed in after Felton’s murder. It went to voice mail. She whispered into the phone, “It’s Gretchen. I’m at Peg’s cabin. Someone’s breaking in. Help me!” She hung up, and listened for more noise, not sure what she should do. She hit redial but when she heard the laundry room door squeak open, she dropped it in her pocket and ran for the front door – she could get outside.

She fought the locks – they were so good at keeping her safe inside that they wouldn’t let her out now. Finally, throwing back the last deadbolt, she pulled open the door, only to find the screen door locked too. She jiggled the handle, trying to force it open.

“Hold it.”

Board to Death

Can you tell us something unique that you experienced while writing this book?

Our book consists of three mystery stories that we wrote around a theme of board games. Amy, Debbie, and I brainstormed a little – but not nearly as much as we should have before we wrote our stories. When they were done, we discovered that my story Sentenced, the third one, was too much like Debbie’s Mind Games. Since hers was second, and tied in so well to Amy’s Victim, we knew I needed to rewrite mine. But I discovered that just by changing a few small details, I totally changed my story so that it was vastly different from Debbie’s.

Greatest words of encouragement anyone has ever personally spoken to you:

Encouragement seems to come on days I need it most. A reader will brag on our books, or someone will send me a thank you note for some small kindness, or my husband will make me a pan of brownies. It’s the little things that keep me going. A friend once suggested I start an “encouragement” file (she called it some beautiful name, but it was foreign and I knew I wouldn't remember it, so I just dubbed mine Encouragement.) I file all kinds of correspondence there as it touches me, and when I’m having a down day, I go in and read some of them to help me.

I also read the Bible for encouragement. Reading the words of Jesus, David, or Paul always lifts my spirits.

In this section, my main character has just had a disturbing conversation with an odd 'Doctor'. They have been on a boat and the experience has been unnerving, to say the least.

Blind Veil

Please share with us a paragraph/excerpt or two from your book

'He’d have to use his foot to retrieve it. It made a scraping sound as he fished for it with his big toe. He found it and slid it into the side of the v-birth nearest to the wall. The cramped corner left no space for his wide foot to attempt to pick it up. Pressing hard against it, he inched it up carefully with his big toe until he could reach it with his finger tips. Like a starving child being offered food, he desperately grabbed up the small remote. His adrenaline was raging. The thought of Byron’s contraption blowing him to bits sent chills through him. He struggled to stop his hands from shaking in order to read its buttons. Pressing ‘release’ was a good first choice and was his ticket to freedom.'

In this next excerpt, my main character is about to be interviewed, but he doesn't know by whom-

'The man stood at the doorway wheezing softly. He was antsy, waiting while trying to relax at the same time. His oversized forehead sported a unibrow and his dark mustache was almost lost under his large nose. His ears were disproportionately small, like dried peaches. One hand hung at his side, hovering over his weapon, and the other drummed with annoyance on his thigh. He attempted a professional stance, deliberately extending what little chest he had as far out as possible over his belly. No doubt he practiced this before a mirror. In his black suit and starched white shirt, he reminded Lamont of a penguin; a large, odd, unlikeable sort of penguin.'

Can you tell us something unique that you experienced while writing this book?

When I wrote the outline and summary and many of the chapters, I shared them with a friend of mine. There are elements of conspiracy in Blind Veil and when my friend was reading them, her eyes grew large. She asked where I had done my research. I told her that I did no research on if, it's fiction and I wrote it from my imagination. She then proceeded to pull out file after file of conspiracy theories she follows as a hobby. Who knew? It was ironic.

Greatest words of encouragement anyone has ever personally spoken to you

My father once told me "Everything is temporary... the good, the bad, and the indifferent." I always remember that when I'm faced with a challenge that I didn't expect. I helps me get through it and also to appreciate all the good moments when I'm in them.

Who, inyour opinion, is the best author?

That’sa hard one. Like any question of that kind, the answer depends on what mood I’min, why I’m reading – lots of factors. Who influenced me most as a writer wouldhave to be Louise Cooper and Storm Constantine, and I’ve been lucky enough tomeet and get drunk with both of them over the years. Louise is sadly no longerwith us, but a very talented fantasy writer; her Time Master trilogy was hugely important to me as a reader andwriter in my 20s. And Storm – all goth eyeliner, black hair and clothes I alwayswanted to wear myself but was never brave enough – her Wraeththu books still plunge me into other worlds I just don’t wantto leave.

What threeelements are essential to a great book?

Characterisation, first and foremost. If you don’tcare about the people, why read the story? Then a plot is useful, otherwise Iget bored. And finally a voice – a unique way of telling a story that getsinside you and won’t let you go.

Who isresponsible for propelling you down the path of writing?

My parents are and have always been great readers,and a weekly trip to the library was a routine in our house. I remember my dadbringing me home a Famous Five (EnidBlyton) book every Friday – I can’t have been more than 7, as that was the ageof the youngest character. But once I hit 11 or 12 and had read Nancy Drew,Malcolm Saville and one or two other solidly middle-class book sets, there wasnothing else for young readers. I read books like 1984 and Brave New Worldand then dived straight into John Wyndham and Robert Heinlein.

Sowho is responsible for my starting to write? All the authors who never wrote YAfiction in the late 1970s (and the publishers who never published it). Istarted writing at 14 – the stories I wanted to read but weren’t available. Avery bad teenage thriller with cardboard characters and no plot, but I finishedit and wrote a sequel, followed by a post-apocalyptic science-fiction story. Istill have them all somewhere to remind me how far I’ve come.

Asidefrom natural talent why do you want to be an author?

I wish I knew. God knows there must be easiercareers, where you’re less dependent on other people’s approval or opinion.Where you don’t regularly expose your soul for public scrutiny. I write becauseI can’t imagine not writing. Because it defines me as a person – as much as thefact that I am a mother and a wife. I am a writer and writers write.

What'sthe best piece you've ever written?

The crime thriller I’m giving away as part of thispromotion. Hamelin’s Child. It’s darkand powerful and takes the reader down roads they may not want to travel. And Ihave absolutely no idea where it came from; it’s the only thing I have everwritten that I didn’t struggle with, that came naturally and completely. AndI’m not sure what that says about me. But I’ve had some great reviews and I’mso pleased that many readers really do “get” it.

Areyour family/friends supportive of your writing?

Don’t make me laugh! My immediate family justcomplain that “mum’s on the computer again” and when will tea be ready? Husbandis supportive in a “whatever makes you happy” kind of way but he can’tempathise – in 21 years of marriage I have never known him read a book. Ever.But my dad was the one who bought me a kindle and without knowing it changed mylife completely when it opened my eyes to indie ebook publishing.

Howwould you describe your style of writing?

Close-up and in-your-face style. I like to get right inside my character’sheads, make you feel what they are feeling and live what they are living. Ihave a habit of using italics for characters’ direct thoughts. It seems to workfor me.

Do youfeel the “real you” is in your writing or outside of it?

I think to write well – to convince your reader tocome on your journey with you, you have to leave a piece of yourself ineverything you write. I think it shows if you don’t. But curiously, by leavingbits of yourself behind, you can grow even more as a writer.

Is yourwriting based on life experience?

They say “write what you know” and while I knownothing about the sex trade, I do know my hard drugs. I’ve had some interestingexperiences while working in law enforcement, but much of it can only come outdisguised as fiction, courtesy of the Official Secrets Act. I’d tell you more –but then I’d have to kill you …

In sucha competitive field how do you make yourself stand out?

As an indie, it’s hard. There are so many of us –all desperately scrabbling for crumbs of attention. I like to think thatquality stands out, but until a reader knows your book exists, they can’t evenmake the decision to buy and read it. So I maintain a sporadic blog at www.debbiebennett.co.uk, although I can never think of anything witty orentertaining to write in it. I’m not a tweeter, although I dabble occasionally,and I dislike it when people constantly promote their book and nothing else, soI try not to do that.

ButI’m lucky enough to know a fair few traditionally-published authors and I wasinvited to be a part of a UK ebook blog site at www.authorselectric.co.uk, set up by award-winning fantasy author KatherineRoberts. I think I’m one of only a few authors there who doesn’t have atraditional publishing background, but they let me stay and ramble in a postonce a month!

How canyour fans get hold of your material?

All my ebooks are, and hopefully will continue bepublished via all amazon sites (in kindle format)and also at smashwords (in most ereader formats plus PDF and HTML).

Do youhave any advice or encouragement for newbies in writing?

Without stating the obvious – you need to write! Toomany would-be authors are more in love with idea of “having written” thanactually writing. I know because I’m probably one of them. Just do it. Forgetwriting for a market (because it will be gone before you are ready to send yourbaby out into the world), forget publishing (it’s not even on the horizon yet,trust me on that one), forget what your friends and family think (if my motherever reads what I write, I’ll die of embarrassment) and just write. And whenyou’ve finished writing, write some more. And rewrite. Again. And again. Andagain. Until it is perfect.

If youhad to go shopping at Midnight who would you take?

Clothes or food shopping? It’d have to be husband,to drive me home as I don’t drive at night anymore unless I have to. He’d alsobe good for carrying everything and making sure that if I was buying clothesthat my bum didn’t look too big…

Howlong can you hold your breath?

Not as long as I used to be able to. I used to scubadive as a teenager and had to swim a length underwater as part of the training.And when you’re playing the dead body for somebody else’s life-saving training,it helps to be able to play dead too.

Whatwas the best gift you’ve ever GIVEN someone?

Enough love, cuddles and security to my teenagedaughter for her to be the wonderful, stroppy, adorable, talented girl that sheis. Corny but true!

Did yougo through an awkward stage growing up?

Oh yes. Don’t get me started. I was the not-rich kidat the posh private school. I wasn’t poor by any means, but not in the sameleague as my school friends – I was just bright enough to get a scholarship. Ididn’t fit in at school and I didn’t fit in at home where all my local friendswent to the local school. It wasn’t until I went to university that I found thegroup I was comfortable with and finally felt like I was me.

Whenyou’re sitting there staring off into space what are you thinking about?

Probablywhat I dreamed about last night, whether there’s any bread in the house, whatI’m going to cook for dinner and what my two main characters are doing, sittingon the 8 am London-Manchester train with a bag full of heroin. All at the sametime.
